As for timing -- I agree that most all of us have our good and bad availability. As a proud West Coaster (look forward to meeting the Kuni!), I'm fairly used to being at least a little off from my thread partners' schedules, but I think the main answer here is the same as to the other piece: everyone should communicate to other players about what you can and can't do. Almost no one gets grumpy, unless they're hearing something as a surprise, after the thread has already started. I would go so far as to say that if your PM box isn't getting steadily more full through the game, you're probably not communicating enough.

…I am legitimately unsure if she's actually had a duel to the death yet, much to her quiet frustration (because it means her lords are still, in her view, coddling her rather than any bloodthirst to be clear )
