Which... doesn't jive with the lore at all. Like, yeah, the Kakita get all the "thin line of blood on the opponent's cheek" bits, but... if all duels involve a serious risk of "holy crap, looks like Akodo Bob is gonna have to learn how to be a lefty," I just don't think anyone would put up with them.

Yeah it's why, even with the headache of the full rules in the 'figuring things out' stage, I like them a lot better than the ease of the one-roll rules.

I think the duel rules work better for non-iaijutsu duels than Iai duels.

I'm working on a more PBP friendly set of rules and one thing this discussion has made me think to add is that the crit you roll is the maximum that you can crit, and you can choose any number less than that. With that in mind, you could instead, say, do only the minimal required to draw blood than gauge off their arm.

A nice, humane house rule to bring back some of the control 4E's R&K had on offer.

Even if I find Fatigue a really, REALLY terrible mechanic for iaijutsu.

I agree - for a warrior's duel or fight to the death then of course, make use of it, but for Iai?

Then again, I'm still firmly in the "play 4e" camp.

Character creation aside, I have yet to find anything I enjoy about the game that 5E handles better, it's true...

First strike duels definitely suffer from the rules being generic for all kinds of duels (including chaotic, informal ones in the middle of battles) and of the stances being generic for all types of conflicts. This creates some weirdness like the default counter against a Earth stance being to strike several times with a focus on "damages" (that should really haven't be called that but more something like "exhaustion") instead of critical... In a "duel to first strike".

A possible way to fix that without really changing the rules could be to introduce a "Feint Strike" action that would work exactly like a Strike in term of mechanisms except it can never inflict critical, and fluff-wise would be the character managing to trick the opponent into avoiding a strike that was never actually launched.

You know, that anime thing where the protagonist feels like it has been attacked by their opponent then realizes they've been tricked by their aggressive battle aura and the other did not even move.

Well, shugenja characters aren't just two times better than non-shugenja characters...

(I hate 4ed "D&D magician" shugenja so much)

Ehhhhhh as Aimi has proven in this game, they still get some laughably unfair advantages sometimes ;)

I'm definitely with Mitsuki on at least reining in the spellcasters.

Also, I'm happy to be in the minority on this, but the system of called raises is terrible and I certainly don't miss that foolishness when playing 5e.

So far I don't have any qualms with the system that aren't just learning pains. Major qualms with the book layout, major... major qualms, but not the system.
