There are the Burning Sands equivalent of shimenawa, simply using materials more readily available there. The two can very much be substituted for one another in most contexts. Some shrines actually mix both, in the lands near Khanbulak for example.

Nothing unusual here, most of the religious oddities than be found in the west are just akin to Rokugan practices with a coat of sand on them.

In general, Ujik religious practices are not very secretive. Shrines are outdoors, often high up and visible from far away, so anything you do before the gods is likely to be witnessed by man too."
