Yeah, it's weird. Don't get me wrong, 4e had far too many skills and never really could handle situations where being good at one thing wouldn't mean being good at another. I mean, we all play games, and there's often situations where knowing one game means being able to pick up another quickly. But lumping them all into Games means your master go player is equally adept at Go as they are Fortunes and winds.
We experimented with specializations in tabletop play, but given that this is a new system for many, and skill condensing does make more people viable at events than would otherwise happen, I'm just rolling with it. After all, people like being good at events, and it's nice to have more people in events than less.

That's what we were experimenting with. But since the games xp expenditure is tied to level advancement, we were doing something like "You get a subskill for every rank you have in the skill" ....and I don't remember what we were doing for the benefit of it being your subskill. Probably a reroll or an extra die.
Something to consider...but maybe after people get fully used to the system
