This. It's very much the rule of "does it matter?" If the outcome doesn't matter much, skip dice and stick to narrative options.

Speaking as someone who has had a GM call for a willpower test to hear the doorbell ringing.. XD

People have very different standards as to "When does it matter?"

Combat? Typically....but if you do something like single handedly assault a Lion castle, do we really need to roll dice to see how many pieces your body is cut into? Some would say yes, because hey, what if they roll unbelievably well, and the enemy rolls unbelievably poorly, wouldn't that make an epic story of single handedly taking a castle?

Conversation? Well, if I don't actually have to know how to swing a sword in combat, why don't I have an option to roll how well to see how I do? Conversely, why should I have to roll if my character should absolutely nail the basics?

The dice are meant to be a tool that serves the story, the story shouldn't serve the dice. They're a spice: some people prefer loads and loads of spice, some order plain.

At the end of the day, we all get together and take part in an incredibly elaborate game of "Let's Pretend" and all we can hope for is that everyone plays nice :)

That's assuming you rolled a dice that doesn't have strife, and you're ok with failing on purpose to avoid it. If we take the event today - killing blow. If you take the strife dice you get strife, if you don't...you get strife.
I'm not assuming taking 'only' dice that don't have strife on them all the time, of course. More like choosing to take less dice with strife, choosing when succeeding or getting extra successes or opportunities is worth the strife - which is something that is part of the system I'm general, of course, but it becomes more important for folks with lower composure.

Today's event was different in that it added strife one way or another, that much is true. That certainly harmed folks with low composure - which was part of the design! But then skill (and luck!) matter as well - even with Composure 10, Senseki beat only the first opponent, and with great difficulty at that, and Raizo couldn't even with Composure 12 XD

In short... That's part of the game, not sure it's that bad. If focus and vigilance matter as much as composure and endurance, it probably evens out.

Also -I really liked the suggestions of different dice roll options for friendly shogi games. I'm assuming similar things could apply for sparring - that might brcome a thing to keep for future 5e Pbp games even!

And then again - rolling taking no strife at all greatly reduces the chances of success (which is why getting compromised matters so much), but it is still possible to do so. I think that can be tied into the storytelling too...

When you're compromised you've got no option, of course. When you're not, in a friendly game for instance it might indicate you're not giving it your all and playing casually. As soon as you start getting invested in winning, you start to eat up strife. It kinda makes sense, in a way?

Same, and the dice were all 'haha...no opportunity for you.' Without the skill, I was not really expecting much though. XD

Yeah, brute forcing rolls with ring dice is doable, but if you actually need some opportunities along with that, skill is the way to go.

I’ve seen lots of unhappiness about Strife. Are there others, like me, who like it? I found the balancing act and the compulsion of stress to be a lot of fun to rp AND to consider when rolling. Granted, it’s a bit more fun with real dice, but it still feels like winning when I take like 5 stride on a roll when I’m aaaaalmost at composure. It’s like pulling out that clutch 20 in a D and D game, or getting all 0s in Old5r.

I dunno, just my 2 cents.

Yes, I like it as well and I think it's a good fit for the genre. I think there are probably ways to improve upon it, both in general and in particular for this format, but I still think it's pretty good as is.
