Opportunities, Strife, Damage, and Void Points

Opportunities:

There are many possible uses for opportunities, both on pages 328-329 of the core book, and in many of the other books. There are two that you should always keep in mind:

Opportunities can cancel strife on the same roll.

Most events allow the spending of opportunities for flair whether that's being Subtle with Air, Careful with Earth, Flashy with Fire, Efficient with Water, or Mystical with Void. The judges appreciate all these things.

GM retains veto power on any opportunity spends that are overly disruptive to the game. Suddenly remembering blackmail on the daimyo, setting fire to the garden, etc.

Strife and being compromised:

Strife is a measure of mental staying power. Engaging in stressful activities tends to wear one down. If your strife exceeds your composure, you are compromised. While compromised, you can not choose to keep any dice that show strife symbols. See the recovery thread on how to fix this problem.

Damage:

When your fatigue exceeds your endurance, you become incapacitated and unconscious. If you take damage again in such a state, you will automatically take a critical strike with it's severity increased by 10. For reference, severity 7-11 will cause permanent damage, 12-15 will likely kill you, and 16+ is instant death.

Void points:

Void points can be spent in a myriad of ways:

Roll an extra ring die on a check, and keep an extra die on that check.

When attacked, you can spend a void point to take a critical strike instead of fatigue.

When suffering a critical strike, you can choose to potential sacrifice your weapon to parry the blow.

Void points can be spent to utilize your disadvantages, or an opponents advantages or disadvantages, with GM permission, as explained on page 101.
