Well, context clues also matter! She's likely to meet him alongside Emiko, who she has pegged already, so her instinct will be to greet him as Otter-san and narrow down from there. Liuxian, on the other hand, is built like a Crab, has spent enough time with the Crab that she talks like them, and she *fights* (and walks) like one! All the evidence except visual was that she… would be a Crab.
