Normally in traveling clothes with a blue-and-gold obi, carrying a wakizashi, a fancy damned fan, and an omamori; carries a tsunoyari outside, too; carries a tsunoyari and wears ashigaru armor on watch, too; has trinkets, etc. at most times
Starting D1, has a silver and purple ribbon tied to his obi, as well.
D9, has a broom in hand and bandages on his hands.
D10-12, has a small whisk broom also thrust through his obi.
D11+, has a second fan.
Playful, irrepressibly flirtatious, blessed by Benten, blessed in lineage. Often smells of cedar.

Reminder:
In 5ed you can change stance at the start of your turn, even in the first turn. The stance you choose for Initiative does not lock you in it.
So, for example, you can roll Initiative with Earth, and thus be protected against critical strikes from opportunities until your next turn, or roll it with Air and get a sweet +1TN until your next turn. Then, at the start of your turn, go Water to unsheathe and strike in the same turn.

Honestly with two players well versed with the system I think I'd probably love dueling - which was definitely never the case in past editions.
It's a lot of thinking ahead, trying to prepare or counter for the choices you think they'll make, while knowing they're doing the same for you.
But, yeah, at a beginner level - it hurts. You don't know the combinations yet, it references a bunch of rules all over the place, and since your opponent is (probably) as unacquainted as you are the cerebral aspect isn't there yet either.
