Moshumaru had spent too long in civilization, he thinks. Even in his darkest days, he was simply drifting from town to town. With that in mind, he decided to stalk one of the other contestants to see if he could pick up on what they find. Following, he watched the contestant find some fantastic fauna - but there was only one. Letting go of it, he moved along.
Boar seemed to be a common hunt, Moshu observed while sharpening some bamboo, so he wondered what else he could go for. Spying a snake in the grass, he lunged onto it with his spear, stabbing it dead. Offering a quick prayer, he bought back his prize.

Hikimasu went into the woods with his bow and blades. He was not looking for animal game that day, but seeking something a bit more rare. He however did not stomp through the forest, as others were on the hunt. Stalking around carefully, looking for color among the muted greens, he stopped when he saw a pink red with slight purple hue among a group of other, more plain orchids.
"Hello, aka-chan", he said and carefully took the flower. As a Shosuro, he knew exactly what he was looking at, it's use and it's rarity among flowers in general. "Perhaps if Lord Shika over indulged at dinner last night you might be of assistance."
He took the middlemist red with him back to Zhang.

While most others seemed to go out finding the biggest and the best animals, Emiko wandered through the forest humming to herself. Just enjoying the walk.
She discovered a cute looking rabbit, but let it go. She didn't want to kill the poor creature!
Eventually she had to come back, and came back carrying a very large purple flower. She didn't know that it was rare, it just looked nice to her. Apparently however, it was very rare.

She needed to walk this morning off, and couldn't've picked a better event if she'd tried. It was exactly what she needed- a mandated reason to get lost in the forest, away from everyone else, surrounded by flora and fauna and nothing else until she was ready to come back.
So deep in her thoughts she didn't notice where she'd ended up until feet met the river, Narumi looked down in surprise. She found a spot and settled herself to sit on the riverbank, watching the water. It wasn't meditation, not really- she'd been too cerebral to ever be really good at letting go of her thoughts and listening to the void for answers.
After a time, she reluctantly gets to her feet and starts to head back to the judges. Hopefully she's going the right way.
Either she'll find something or she won't, and come back emptyhanded. She didn't much care either way, not today.
So maybe it's fortuitous that she runs across a berry bush she recognizes, and she retrieves a larger leaf to collect them in. Plucking a handful from the bush, she folds them carefully into the leaf, and tucks it away.
It takes a while, as Narumi was not the gifted scout her father was, but the Otter finds her way back to where she started.

Senseki had been out in the forest quite often since the start of the Miai, and he had had plenty of time to take a good look at what the most common - and some uncommon - trees and herbs in the region were. So when he went out to look for something different today, he had a pretty good idea of what would NOT count as a rare plant...
... what he did find, though, after carefully, but skillfully making his way through the woods and checking the trees around one after another, surprised even himself. He first noticed a hint of a fragrant scent which he couldn't recognise... then, slowly and carefully following its trail, he saw it. A tree with a broad, deep-green crown, white and reddish flowers. He kept looking at it for some time... he actually remembered it. Not from experience - definitely not from experience. But he was almost sure that was that plant he had read and heard about it in one of the botany books he could get his hands on during his training. A very rare plant indeed, found in few places in the Empire according to the book. He could see the page he'd seen it in clearly in front of him as he came closer, touched the trunk, then reached up towards some of the leaves - the rain on his wicker hat and face not even noticeable to him.
The wide smile and his pleased serenity showed how pleased - ecstatic, indeed, although that was perhaps an odd way to show it - he was with his find, as he brought back a twig with some of the deep-green, glossy leaves and two flowers, one pure white, one tinted with red, of what he was pretty sure was a very rare magnolia tree.
What Zang would find of his find was still to be seen, but he knew he was happy to have seen one of these trees!

Oh, finding these in these woods? She'd been aaaaaall over them.
She scurries off into the woods, hair wet in the rain, ducking into a bush to a small depression she'd been debating harvesting. Peaking through into the faintly earth-smelling depression, she smiled, finding what she had hoped to. It was a rare species of mushroom, and not one eaten often. So she'd grab this one, since it was pretty, and also bring the other one with her later.
She found the tree where she remembered it, eyes closed, tongue out to one side in a subconcious remembering gesture as she counted her steps, feeling the underbrush tear at her kimono. Yup, here it was, a large Matsutake popping up from a low growing pine tree that looked more like a bush. Inoshishi had no idea how it had come to be here, but she wasn't about to turn her back on fate.
Between the long, oddly shaped tendrils of the Kirinomitake and the pungent earth-scent of the fleshy Matsutake, she was certain she'd done well.

Yasu had no great desire to kill anything without need and was pretty sure "impressing the nakodo" didn't count as a true need. Instead, she paused just within the forest to rest her hand against one of the dripping trees and search through her medical knowledge for some of those useful plants seldom seen in her own climate.
After a few moments, she set off, looking for places that would get just the right sort of evening sun...when there was any sun...to find the blood-strengthening ferns referenced so often in her midwifery texts. With words of thanks to the soft plants, she harvested enough to see her own home through a year, though it likely was only a few months worth in places like this.

As Unsei headed off into the forest, hat on head and cowlick praising the kami high underneath it, there was... something... coming from them. It seemed they were... singing... as they headed deeper in to go find this plant.
"Dun-dun-dundundundun. Gonna find this plaaaaaant~ Gonna find a plaaaaaaant~" They hummed to themself while dancing with their shoulders. "Gotta find-a plaaaaaaant! Cus I'mma shuuuuugennnnjaaaa~ I don't want no blooooood~ That's how you get buttttt-tooooooouched~ By-the baaad things~"

And so, they plucked it and headed back to camp. They could've tried to find another one, but they didn't want to risk it. So, with it in hand, they sung their way back to the gathering area just as happy as they could be.

Wears: Unsei often is seen wearing star-covered robes in shades of black, dark blues, and gold. In the center of their forehead is a small birthmark in the shape of a diamond/star, and they always wear a hat with a short veil and tassels on it. Their hair is kept in a long ponytail that reaches down to their ankles.

Edogawa wasn't a hunter. While he didn't believe his presence caused death, he had no wish to add to the tally of dead surrounding him. That included animals. He did know a little medicine, however, and was fortunate enough to find a rare herb to harvest and return with.
Tanabe was no avid hunter but on the river it was more a matter of survival than sport. He wandered through the woods and eventually found tracks for a large animal probably a young boar. he moved through the forest with quiet steps, unexpectedly subtle for one usually so loud.
he found the beast rooting for food Tanabe said a quick prayer to the kami and then let his ax fly burying itself deep in the neck of the large animal. He pulled out and cleaned his ax before hanging up and draining the animal. When it was good to transport the large Badger slung the boar across his broad shoulders and brought it back to the starting point.
