Kyuden Shika is surrounded by a modest wall, the lower half a sloped stone ishigaki to allow the wall to shift in response to minor earthquakes. While defensible, the wall's primary function is to keep out errant wildlife. Similarly, the towers do allow sentries to watch for enemy movements, but are primarily used for fire watch.

The ground outside the walls is clear and beaten, which does improve the chances of spotting intruders before they reach the walls, be they bandits or bunnies. But this space is primarily used as a place for speardancers in training to run at full speed without disrupting the order of the castle within.

As with almost every part of Kyuden Shika, there are stories told about the walls and towers. From sweetly romantic stories of notes tucked between certain stones to arrange meetings; to the downright bawdy ones about activities one might try sneaking into a lone shift in one of the watchtowers; to the downright cautionary tales of disaster striking while a sentry was so distracted, Shika guards have a full catalog to share through any dull hours.
