Bo lumbered his way on stage and took his place behind the drum. A slow, steady, beat began to fill the space.

A military cadence? A mimic of a heartbeat? The bare minimum the big Crane could do while his brow furrowed in concentration?

Almost certainly the latter... as to which, if either, of the former might also apply that would be up to his partner to reveal.

Narumi wasn't particularly nervous. While she was not a performer in the same sense Emiko was, they'd gone through the same school, though Narumi had never excelled in a particular instrument or shown much desire to dance, she could perform admirably when called to do so.
And now was the time to do so.
She steps on stage as well, walking beside and a bit behind Bo and therefore probably completely hidden from view until he reaches the drum and she emerges, making her way over to pick up a sanshin. More than a few times, in different ports Narumi had found herself playing with travelling groups of musicians, and it was one of the few things she actively looked forward to... The Sanshin had nothing to do with her structured life as a matchmaker. It belonged solely in the moments when she was allowed off the riverboat to be free.

A reassuring glance to Bo as he concentrates fiercely but keeps a rhythm! She nods and starts a tune. The sanshin has a bit of a twang, and she plays it well enough but is certainly no star.

Bo had never been much of one for music but he couldn't help but smile as he listened to his new friend perform.

But, as she continued, something seemed off. She was singing to a drum but the drum was slowing... slowing... stopped.

Why would the drum stop?

Wait! He was the drum!

He couldn't help but mutter, "Shit, sorry!" as he realizes his error in his distraction and begins drumming again.

Of course, not having musical instinct only nerves, it manifested as a much faster beat as he tried to 'catch up' to where he should be.....

She's a performer enough, and a bold-faced liar enough, not to show any confusion or upset at the drum dying out - and continues playing the song as if this is all part of the plan!
When Bo picks up the beat again, she's inwardly relieved. She keeps calm and carries on.

The drumming is... something... but it's all good! Narumi makes due, the tune she plucks keeps going: emotional enough, light-hearted enough, to overcome her partner's off-beat addition.
Reaching the end, she stops and puts the instrument to her side before bowing to the judges deeply.
That could've gone so much worse, honestly...
