The Theater of the Missing Fan has been the host of many plays that are considered risky during its long and storied history. Plays that are just a little too lascivious, too politically charged, too passionate, or just too experimental for more traditional venues have long found a home here. Actors have found that success in these risky venues can sometimes be their big break, while failures seem to be more easily brushed off as just 'what is expected' of an out of the way Minor Clan venue.

The name of the theater dates back to a story about a married samurai giving his fan to an actress as a gift, then being embarrassed when attending a play with his wife and no fan to hide his reaction during one of the actress’s love scenes. However, the names tend to shift, depending on the teller, indicating that the story may be more fabrication than history, or perhaps the plot of one of the theater’s earliest plays.
