Also dark...the theater as the lanterns are lowered and the play begins!

Daisuke and Kamie by Kasuga Toshi

Daisuke of the Mantis clan is a playwright whose writer's block and gambling debts have landed him into a jam. In order to pay of his loan sharks, he must write a new play within 30 days, or he'll be killed. To try and speed up the process, he enlists the services of a ronin scribe, Kamie, who is surprisingly cultured and very opinionated for a ronin. As Daisuke dictates his newest romance, Kamie keeps interjecting her thoughts on the story. It ends up being nearly a colloboration, as she shifts the Manti's story, and the two also fall for one another, imitating the tale being written.

"Well some of us will simply bring a spouse home", he said easily. "Others will start a whole new life in a new place...though I think there may be some among us who will swim quite well in that."

He turned to face the stage as the play began.

He had to admit the play had some good lines, and the adaptations of theater inner workings were nice to see, even if not wholly accurate.

He turned to Narumi. "So? Was this any better?"

He seemed a little amused at her flustered behavior. "Yes and he dragged her in for his own selfish reasons, but is that bad? Some would call it love."

She looks at the scorpion and her eyes narrow slightly. "That's not love. You said it, it's selfish. He's putting what he wants above any thought of her wellbeing.
I mean, in my opinion... what I feel love should be, if being there for someone when they're needed most. Because it's the right thing to do. Not putting either samurai's needs before the other, but working toward a common goal.

The Suzume seems rather pleased with the day's play, despite its perhaps naïve take on life. Seeing the Shosuro he'd talked to only a few times before discussing with Narumi, he moves closer, hoping to discuss the play... but soon sees they're apparently in a heated discussion, and after a quick bow to them both, keeps some distance away for now.
