"Ah...hai." She smiled "I guess that is why so many painters prefer the scenery painting rather than portraits." She looked at the Asahina. "So what are you going to do?"

"You."

he picked up the brush and a canvas and turned to face her, sitting down with with it in his lap and just stared at her for a few moments.

"Huh?" The Kaito giggled. "I mean about the broken knife."

"Oh" He set the painting things aside. "I'm going to repair it of course, the break is a clean one so it should not be difficult and I will clean and sharpen it as I would any other blade. But his note to me was vague and that gives me room to me mischievous. After it is repaired im going to make it look like I fixed it with the kintsugi method, like my gift to the Shika, a thin bead of soft gold holding the steel together. It would be useless as a weapon that way, only useful as decoration. I expect he will be furious but it will be his fault for not being clear in his letter or just speaking to me directly. Assuming he doesn't gut me in a rage I will show him the truth and then hopefully we can have an honest dialog. That's my idea at least, I said I wouldn't act against him without your permission and that still holds true."

"I don't think he will be furious about it. He probably will be glad. If it is the same blade I found in the temple I think becoming a decoration would be best. But I would like to do something to it as well." The Kaito grinned.

"Okay, do I need to fix it first or is this something you can do right now? I have it with me."

"You need to fix it first." She nodded. "I would like to do a cleansing ritual and hopefully the air kami will grant me a wish."

"Then I will bring it to you once it is finished." He regarded the paint supplies, he had a picture in his heart but did not want to discourage the Kaito's artistic asperations by showing off.

The Kaito nodded. "You said you wanted to paint me... Go ahead." Bai smiled. "I would be honored if you did."

In truth he could have painted her with his eyes closed, every curve and line of her he had seen or touched had been committed to memory long ago. But if he was going to show-off he might as well make it count. The painting took little time to complete, so certain was he of every brushstroke, he was painting a dream and hoping it would become a reality. When he finished he let out a deep sigh and a single tear ran down his face then he showed it to her. It showed her kneeling beside a pond feeding fish, a large tree gave her shade and in the background was a house, indistinct shapes filled the windows of the home with the warm sense of a family.
