Kyuden Shika

Shika Kan, having prepared for yet another day of teaching went over their papers one last time before the class arrived. They'd been informed of the addition of a particular student. He was a very forthright student, but where others grasp spiritual concepts easily, Nesshin was firmly rooted in the material world. And now those two traits had landed him more lecturing. Kan had wanted to protest. There was hardly any chance of Nesshin learning anything from the actual lesson. But Katsuteru had a different sort of education in mind, so Kan hadn't.

Nesshin, carrying a broom, enters and bows.

"Kan-sensei," he says, according the respect due, even if both of them know it's punitive. "This one apologizes for the need for remediation."

He bows again. His hand does not leave the broom.

(Going to say no, but I'll throw another NPC you can do so with later)

Kan took in the sight of the broom with a small internal sigh. Guessing it was somehow tied to their punishment rather than their magical means of conveyance to class, they thought it best not to comment on it.

Instead they bowed in return.

"Good Morning, Nesshin-san." they said. "Please have a seat, the rest of the class should be along shortly."

"Hai, Kan-sensei!" Nesshin replies, nodding his head and taking a seat.

He sees the sensei's glance at the broom, shrugs, and adds "Shika-jodai's orders."

Shika Kan nodded, having assumed as much.

There was little enough time for talk as the rest of the class filed in, all having just begun their training. Nesshin and his broom stood as a mountain among a horde of pebbles. Pebbles with curious looks at this sudden addition to the class.

"Good morning Shika-sensei!" they said with enthusiastic bows before seating themselves.

Oh, hell, Nesshin thinks, but he does his best to pay attention to the lecture he knows will come.

And he has already greeted the sensei, although he once again bows, adding "Please teach me" to his.

Shika Kan took got into their teaching stride.

"So, today by special request from Shika Katsuteru we're going to be learning about rain spirits." they started. ":Who can name one of the five most famous ones?"

"Amefuri Kozo, Sensei," Nesshin says, making damned sure he gets the information the castellan has demanded he get.

Kan nodded.

"Very good Nesshin-san." Kan said, perhaps a bit too warmly, since they were really used to dealing with smaller childrfen.

"And who can tell us more about what they look like?"

One of the other boys piped up.

"They look like little kids, wearing kimonos, wooden sandals, and wide brimmed straw hats." said the boy helpfully.

"Very good," Ichiro-san. "And what do they like?"

"Playing in the rain, and the look of people when they're wet." volunteered a girl.

"And what's the most dangerous thing about them, class?"

"Never steal their hat!" they piped up as one.

Hat? Nesshin thinks. I don't remember that from the lessons.

But there was the bit with the Suzume, from what Bai-chan said, he remembers. And then it dawns on him, and his eyes widen.

The Suzume's hat! I have to ask him about it!

But when will I see him again?
