It was a fake. A skillful one certainly, but a fake nonetheless.
With a spring to his step, Bayushi Mitsu arrived bright and early to the castle on the fifth day. He took another look at the paintings in the hallway, and then began a process of polite inquiry into the officials, guards, and servants to find out if they had noticed anything suspicious in the previous night when the painting had to have been switched. All the while he kept his senses open for anything that triggered a hunch - or, of course, his expertise in human behavior and acts of subterfuge.

Mitsu discovered that there was an irregularity in the guards in the night in question. The guard that was supposed to be on duty in the deep of the night was relieved a couple hours early by a friend who had been getting prepped for forest patrol. The friend, one Shika Muneyoki, then conveniently took off towards the woods for an extended patrol. It might be possible to catch up with him in the evening if his route is held to.

Hajime, who had been there the entire time, found that this had played out much like he had hoped. He wondered if this Muneyaki was acting on their own or under orders. Unfortunately, he was not exactly built to be running through the jungle and swinging from rope vines, but what the hell, let's give it a go.
