by Seppun Unsei
Like most people, Unsei went straight for debating a monk. They had debated these old guys for years now back home and damned if they weren't gonna debate one here, especially for prizes. Since they were so detached, it made things less fun, especially when Unsei couldn't see the steam coming off of their big, bald heads like the ones back home in Otosan Uchi, wherein Unsei may or may not be known as the Temple Terror, but it was fun regardless. With a few short words, they managed to easily verbally wiggle around her weak defense like some sort of Scorpion breaking into literally anything. When it was over, the monk was left speechless and Unsei bowed deeply in respect for the old lady, who wasn't actually that old, but in Unsei's mind, they got their butt kicked like a grandma.

by Kasuga Yoshi
Yoshi picks the lord, thinking that it would be a good mark. People who tended to be assertive pushed back hard when directly questioned. Instead, Yoshi does not question the major premise (or agree to it), but begins to lead the lord down a path that puts him in agreement.

"Certainly the harvest matters m'lord, but is it the rice itself is superior? We have grades do we not? Perhaps a larger harvest offers a greater abundance or the higher quality of rice, but cannot that advantage be offset by a superior brewer in their batch?"

"Yes, a Clan's tradition is vital to the craft but, are we not constantly honing it? That would mean that a Crane duelist or an Akodo general could never be defeated in their chosen field. Perhaps they win most of the time, but one lucky day? One lucky year?"

It takes a little longer than Yoshi would have liked, but he and the lord are happily swigging from a bottle that Yoshi had smuggled in, both flushing as they exchange stories of beloved vintages.

by Kaikoga Koi
Koi came into the Hall looking a bit perturbed by today's event, the whiplash from yesterday's caught Koi off guard before a smile spread across her face that would make the Grinch a bit envious.

Straightening her back, she approached her opponent and stood before him with a coy smile. She stood perfectly still, her jade eyes gazing into the young samurai before her with a cool and calm.

Bowing Koi motioned for the young bushi to speak.

"Clearly, it was the Avenue's of Cherry Blossoms." The Young bushi said. "It has the best production in Rokugan this season."

Koi rolled her eyes. "It was grossly over budget due to the coin used to pay for Aki Nagamatsu's outrageous wig collection. I mean, if you are balding have at least the decency to take it like a champ, and stop butching the stage with those animal's on his head."

Koi raised her head, and tightened the muscles in throat to give a garbled, wobbling really spot on impression of the actor. "Oh, Mishayuki-san! I burn for you..." Before turning to a calm, an expression.

The Young bushi spoke again. "The music of the play.."

Koi interjected. "Was sung horribly offkey..."

The Young bushi again. "The costumes.."

"Dated, and did you see the stitching on the head dress in the second act? That poor thing was held on by glue and a dream, and you know it is." She added sharply.

Koi raised a single finger. "It was overstretched, the troupe was filled with more drama than the play itself, the script was bland without any innovation to the art after it was very vocal about being different, and new. Plus, the actors in the troop were well underpaid for their efforts." She added, her voice cold and sharp.

Koi shook her head counting on her fingers as she spoke her words vicious and clear. "Nay, the best play this year was the Daimyo of Mushi Kami. It completely revitalised the way that staging was used ushering in a new whole generation of creative thinking. The stage production for the digging sequence on the set was outstanding, how they interacted with the set and props. It was incredibly well received, and the monologue in the fourth act was rumoured to have received high compliments from Lord Kakita."

The Young Bushi looked perplexed for a moment before bowing his head. "I concede, you are correct."

Koi bowed her head, and left the stage happy.

While Yasu's training included a number of scholarly topics, Shinsei wasn't really the focus of any of them. Still, that argument seemed more likely to let her draw on her background than trying to talk about sake without any to drink. Nor did she have any idea what was new this season vs some other.

There was a large element of feeling her way through the passage, through the discussion, leaving very little room for rhetorical flourishes, even if she were inclined toward them.

She smiled at the young samurai-ko opposite of her as she leaned in closer, barely staying decent. "Well, Wicked Resolutions was certainly from what I heard the talk of all the artists in the Painted City .
Yogo Sayaka who desires Yogo Kagami, her sister of the same father but different mothers is lead into a dangerous game where her sister promises her one night with her if in exchange she ruins the upcomming marriage Asashina Chizu and Shoshoru Ryu.
Ryu being a former lover of Kagami is poised to wed her, as he broke of an engagement with her to get engaged with Chizu.
Sayaka is tasked to seduce Chizu and make a public scene to ruin the wedding, easily done as chizu is noted to be pure and innocent. If Sayaka suceeds she is offered a wicked night, while if she fails her prized unicorn steed shall belong to Kagami. But first sayaka wishes to seduce the daughter of her Sensei Asuna.
Asuna was well known at court for arguing for purity before being wed and so Sayaka considered her a propper and enticiting target.
I know I know it is quite scandalous but the way that Sayaka as she seduces Asuna falls in love with her, and then even refuses to share a bed with her , because she has gotten unsure about her own feelings was quite moving.
The way that Kagami plays with their young love and ruins it , before Sayaka pushing Asuna out of the way of a wild horse dies and is reuinted.
And the way of course in which at the end, as Kagami tries to profit from her sisters dead but gets banished after Asuna reveals the diary that Sayaka entrusted her with showing her cruelty and moontouched desires for all to see.

"As the Tao says: People argue. Nature acts." said the monk, contemplating one of the giant trees in the distance.

"Clearly this one is meant to be examined against the other saying: The majesty of nature was not meant to be imprisoned. The longer it remains docile, the more ferocious it will be when released."

"This is not a quote from the Tao."

"But it is a saying from Shinsei and therefore a useful hint to understand what he meant with the original quote."

"I don't remember such a quote from any of the major texts from Shinsei's lifetime..."

"The 47 sayings of Shinsei, from his time in the Burning Sands. A translated version of that text was discovered in a Qamarist library about three centuries ago, brought back to Rokugan, translated back into Rokugani and shared with the Brotherhood. It sheds a new light on a lot of Shinsei's teachings."

"The authenticity of such a book..."

"Have you read the book little one? Have you compared it side by side with other texts from Shinsei? Have you traced back its journey through the Sands, where and when it was first written? Have you studied the historical accounts from that place and age? The best scholars from the Unicorn did, and they agreed Shinsei did indeed spend some time in the Sands, and that the sayings were from his mouth."

"Uh... Ah..."

"You argue. The children of the wind act."

by Agasha Inoshishi
Inoshishi was really hoping for some more shuteye. Someone had kept her up all night, and frankly, sitting hurt.

The monk in front of her calmly stated a particular Sutra and Inoshishi froze. What? Was this some secret Deer sutra she’d never heard of? Fuck it, she’d do her best impression of that irritating blowhard, Togashi Chinmoku. She simply stares.

Well, she was the one that had wanted to forget. With everyone still staring and beginning time whisper, Inoshishi has to do something. She leans slightly to the side and lets one rip. This does NOT have the intended effect.

Shit.

At least it was only a fart. Inoshishi flushes, How the fuck do the Togashi make this seem so easy?
