What the fuck is this?

Raizo found himself staring at a board of little rocks.

Tactics my ass, these fucking stones don't stub toes or get homesick. They also don't need to eat...

He looked at what his first opponent was doing and decided to pace himself while he figured out what the fuck was going on.

He eventually grew frustrated enough to actually lose.

Yuzu takes in his heart that he would do his best today. He defeats the first adversary with a small hiccup and when he faces the second opponent, hubris gets ahead of him as he tries to buy time. As he makes a final offense, though, he doesn't notice a backhanded tactic awaiting for him and he falls into the trap.

The young Seppun nearly brakes his On by cursing his opponent family line. But only does it in his mind.

Bayushi Mitsu sat down to play with a casual air. While the first two opponents were defeated with patient ease, his strategy unraveled with the more experienced competitor, and in the flurry of a desparate, animated gambit that almost succeeded, Bayushi's go domination was no more. With a friendly laugh he assured his opponent that he would have, should have won, if only... With that, he excused himself quickly after his matches were done.

Go wasn't a game the Kuni found particularly edifying. Their enemies didn't line up for tidy tactical maneuvers. Go stones didn't tunnel into the midst of your forces, and setting up a solid defensive line was almost always an important way to begin.

Here though, Yasu found her little wall of stones only offered false comfort and attempted to shift strategies far too late. A desperate countergambit saw the last of her little stones swept from the board so quickly she couldn't even understand the moves. Eyes narrowed and fists clenched in frustration, she glared at the rather young man, sure there was trickery or cheating involved.

Catching Tanabe's eye at a nearby board though, she couldn't help a smile though. The distraction did keep her from flipping the board, at least.

The first match was more difficult than Edogawa anticipated. He should have taken a break after he defeated his opponent, but he was determined to keep playing. After an early mistake, however, the Dragon abruptly conceeded the match and retired.

Post by Matsu Ishioka » Sat Aug 14, 2021 10:04 pm

Matsu Ishioka knew going in that he wasn't a particularly skilled go player, but he'd played enough times to have the basics down, and a sound if not original or exciting strategy that he expected to deliver solid results against these Deer samurai, most of whom seemed to be of only modest skills themselves.

Initially, Ishioka built the defense that he wanted for the early game, transitioned into a more dynamic and flexible mid-game strategy, and set his opponent up for a defeat in short order.

"But Matsu-san, I will just go here," the young Deer said, smiling politely. Well, smiling like the stereotype of a pompous Crane... No, no, really, the Deer was right. It was a fine move. Good for him for seeing it.

And then the Deer survived again.

And again.

Finally, after what seemed like a brutally long slog against a basically unskilled opponent, Ishioka laid down the piece that secured his victory. The infuriating Deer bowed respectfully and retired, and Ishioka, recognizing the great force of will he'd already spent just in defeating this humble opponent, bowed respectfully to the Deer judges and concluded his day. Well, concluded his games for the day. The rest of his day would feature a lot of drinking and evaluation of his life choices.

Inoshishi knows all about provocation! Not so much about Go. This is going to be...interesting.

She bows to her opponent and provokes him into a dumb move, not through her opening, but through her incessant rattle of questions.

"Wait, does this go here? Can I use black? What about blue? Oh, I can't? Well, that's okay. So I put a stone out. Can I put two out? Can I capture your queen?" etc etc etc. The poor Shika.

Nope, she can't. But she doesn't strife out and does strife the other guy with her incessant questions.

The Sparrow had heard of go, of course. He'd seen some playing, mostly with stones collected around, here and there. He knew it was an important game, and his sensei had even mentioned it was not just a game. She said it could have a deeper meaning, was used by generals to train their strategic acumen and pitch it against others, and by monks to practice reflection and awareness.

He knew all that, but he only actually remembered playing it once or twice, with his grandpa, years and years ago. He was definitely focused on more practical matters, even though it sounded interesting. One of those things you keep thinking 'maybe I should try it again at some time' but end up never doing.

Until you suddenly have to.

And... well, try it he did. Against another beginner, which was just as well. The fact the beginner in question was years younger than him didn't bother him too much... sure the Shika had more time for such things, right?

Or at least that's what he kept trying to reassure himself of as he studied the board carefully, taking a long time before going for each move as he tried to set up a decent defence to start the first game.

It took him some time before he noticed what looked like an elaborate defence actually had some holes in it. He kept his cool through it, but it took him longer than expected before he actually managed to get into a... slightly more comfortable position.

When he finally did, he thought he could finally try to set up a strategy to corner and defeat the young Deer player - again, carefully and studying the board before each stone was played. And, again, his careful study clearly showed his lack of practice in the game, as he saw his attempts at cornering his opponent fended off one after another, and managed to lose some of the ground he'd gained in the process.

He went on to play even more carefully and slowly, then. He had many failures in this game. MANY failures, and he had shown many of them... but being reckless was definitely not one of them. So, with more careful study, and a playing rhythm that may have helped - by tempting the other player into falling asleep - he finally managed to corner them, and win that first game.

As it was done, the Sparrow greeted his opponent with a wide smile, congratulated them and thanked them for the game... and bowed to Shika Zang saying he would refrain from attempting a second game, just retiring to the background to take a few looks at others' more interesting, faster-paced games.

Not that he could understand much of what was going on in them, of course.

Tanabe had played a few games on the river but was no Go master he had a good eye for the board and kept his play flexible and focused on defense. People were likely surprised to see the large and boisterous Otter play in such a reserved way.

His unfamiliarity with the game game showed but so did his mental resilience, he made constant misplays but through it all kept a cool head and eventually maneuvered the beginning opponent into making his own misplays to an eventual victory.

the next opponent was tougher and Tanabe had learned few lessons from his previous game. The Otter was mostly brute forcing his way through the game by keeping himself cool and allowing his opponent to eventually question themselves. why was this Otter so unflappable? he must see something I don't. some new strategy I need to adjust for. Tanabe's opponent thought themselves into a corner while the Otter's mind was mostly preoccupied by a particular Crab.

As strong as the Otter was mentally eventually the strategy and trying to work a lesser used muscle of his got to him and as he faced his last opponent he couldn't even think to try and come up with a strategy. He basically went for an all out attack. To many on lookers surprise it almost worked but his opponent saw the attack at the last second and deftly cut off the attack ending the streak for the Otter.

"whew man I'll take multiple round sumai tournament over this thing any time!" he said loudly but with a cheer despite the migraine building behind his eyes.
