Re: (D11, MM) The Language of Flowers (Event)
Of course. The kind of art culture I am the worst at.
Yoshi could be described as what, in the future, could be called a philistine. To him, the value of art was what it got him: into the bed of someone special, a perception of class, a way to make money. Flower arrangement held no sway.
Making up random stuff? Sure
"You see how this flowers are wilting. It's all about the sublime nature of inpermance"
"Or something" He mutters under his breath

While Hajime makes an objectively lovely display, which garners the sympathy and esteem of the crowd--Shika Zang is distracted by a messenger just as Hajime goes to present it. He opens his mouth to say something, but Zang says "Pressing business kid, just stick it over there," waving at the table. He never evaluates it. Hajime is sad.

Spending 3 opportunity to encode a message in the display for Shiba Taemon, noted ikebana hobbyist.
Hajime's display consisted of a thick, powerful sprig of bamboo crowned by chickweed blossoms rising out of a layer of interspersed broom, pink camellia, and heliotrope blossoms surrounded by a wreath of holly leaves. The stem of a red tulip wraps around the bamboo so that its blossom rests pointing outwards about two thirds of the way up the stalk.
Bamboo-Loyalty, steadfastness
Broom-humility
Pink Camellia--longing
Chickweed-Rendezvous
Heliotrope-Devotion
Holly-defense, domestic happiness.
Red Tulip-declaration of love.

Re: (D11, MM) The Language of Flowers (Event)
What's wrong with Pei-Pei-sama? Nesshin thinks as he steps forward to make his rolls--er, handle the spreading blooms...
At first, it's an easy thing, the Deer's hands picking over the flowers, caressing them, but he seems to get lost in the tactile sensation, and he is distracted as he composes and aligns the arrangement.
Fortunately--fortunately--he and Zang are of like mind in many things, and he brings his experience with the man to bear, speaking of the immanence of LIFE and the raw power of being IN THE MOMENT and FEELING one's way through an uncertain situation.
It seems to go over well.
Nesshin kneads his hands as he makes his way swiftly out.

Re: (D11, MM) The Language of Flowers (Event)
Bo hadn't tried ikebana since he was about seven years old and the resulting mess and waste of rare flowers had been part of Doji-sensei's final exasperated decision to send the boy back to his parents. As such he was ill-prepared for the day's event and his nerves showed in his furrowed brow as he still tried to push his way through. Thinking back to the other day he grabbed some peonies and some river flowers... though mostly what most would view as weeds....
The arrangement itself was haphazard and somewhat messy. It wasn't until Bo, looking down the row at the other competitors, spotted Narumi and absently moved some things around to match hers, that it suddenly took form into something almost acceptable.
Finally he bowed deep to the judge, wiped his brow, and shrugged, "Uh... to be honest I can't say it's great. But I'll say I tried my best. And, in the end, ain't that what you're really testin'?"
Had it been Pei Pei judging it likely would have sunk like a rock but it seems that Zang appreciated the blunt honesty.

Pei Pei was not there, hmm? Well, no matter. Hikimasu took his time and observed the new judge. He was uncertain, that was good for the Scorpion. He could be more easily convinced of the meaning of his arrangement, which was important as Hikimasu wasn't great at Ikebana.
Yet somehow, he had a good idea. Brown, Blue, Purple, Red and White were a risky mix, he thought, but he could use twigs for the brown and make some kind of lattice work around the color to wrap the small vase. He did proper work, then he looked at what other people were working on and rearranged some of his colors to match the others, the flower scents were almost distracting, but he managed.
When he presented it to the new Shika judge he managed to get his point across with the piece. It emphasized loyalty to one's ideals and how in doing so, others can feel that and will appreciate you.

Hikimasu is a bit overly proud of his work and it shows, as he's actually 10/8 strife by the end of this, but wasn't compromised until the last roll completed.

Re: (D11, MM) The Language of Flowers (Event)
Chewing her lip, Aimi scoured her mind for appropriate ideas... and came up entirely empty. She'd been far away from any kind of court or high society for far too long, so her basic idea of what would even be appropriate here was doubtless several years out of date. Well, so be it.
At least she hadn't lost her skills or the basic knowledge, carefully selecting a vibrant yet harmonious arrangement of flowers... which she realised, with a stifled curse, clashed horribly with those around her. Well, damn it all, she only had to convince one of the most blunt and straightforward members of the court of its quality, at least?
"It's a shame the kami won't do ikebana for me, ne Shika-sama?" She said with a rueful laugh, "Alas, they don't see colour the same way we do, and are fond of flowers from across the Empire brought together in something approaching harmony."
She thought he rather liked her reasoning, which would just have to do.

Inoshishi is quite happy to arrange flowers, she loved flowers. While the lowlands had their downsides, the major upside was all the flowers! She’d heard the Shoshuro were famous for gardening, so she tried to find their garden, she was really quite interested! That was when those Scorpion started following her…

Re: (D11, MM) The Language of Flowers (Event)
Matsu Ishioka knew a challenge like this would come. He was no artisan. But he also was no quitter. He'd lost ground by missing the hunting challenge, so this competition would get everything he had.
By the end he was almost shaking from exertion, but he knew he'd done well and it felt amazing. And he saw Bo looking at Narumi. And that didn't feel amazing.
-------------
Step 1: Determine what would be the most appropriate display right now: Earth/Culture at TN 2
D11 event, appropriateness: Earth/culture TN2. Earth 3, culture 1 | TN: 2 | Success: 3 / Opportunity: 1 / Strife: 2
Success, 1 opp to show off, net 2 strife.
2/12 composure
Step 2: Craft the display: Fire/Aesthetics at TN 2
D11 event: craft display. Fire/aesthetics TN2. Fire 2, skill 0, void point. | TN: 2 | Success: 2 / Opportunity: 1 / Strife: 0
Success, 1 opp to show off, 3 strife because anxiety, also gains void point.
5/12 composure
Step 3: Align the display to increase the harmony with the other entries: Void/Aesthetics at TN 2
D11 event: harmonize displays. Void/aesthetics TN 2. Void 2, no skill, void point. | TN: 2 | Success: 3 / Opportunity: 2 / Strife: 4
Success, 2 opps to show off, net 4 strife.
9/12 composure
Step 4: Convince the judge of the piece’s quality: Courtesy at TN 3 (Earth 4, Fire 4, Air 2)
D11 event, presentation, Water/Courtesy TN 3. Water 3, courtesy 1 | TN: 3 | Success: 3 / Opportunity: 0 / Strife: 0
Success.
Scoring priority:
Passed the fourth roll: Yes
Passed the most rolls: 4

Most opportunities spent to show off on the first three rolls: 4
Most bonus successes on the fourth roll: 0
