Some people have the names of their loved ones etched into the pieces, while those seeking a coy romance have secret words etched on the underside of the pieces to pass along to their "opponent". Lately, however, Goto has felt his own heart captured, but he just can't figure out the board.

Description: The local sake bar is run by a man named Ueno, who is quite well known for his knowledge of sake and the quiet yet dignified manner in which he serves it. He's heard many a thing in his time when sake loosens lips, but his remain closed, as he is also quite well known for his discretion. Lately, however, he is wondering if there is more to life than being a highly competent bartender.

Mirumoto Namika has never been described as a kind samurai. Dutiful, skilled, honorable, focused, sure, but never particularly kind. There was one person in the empire who would have described her as kind, had anyone coaxed it out of him: her husband Mirumoto Shusake. A small bookish bureaucrat of some relative importance in Shiro Mirumoto. Neither of them were particularly talkative in public, and yet when they sat alone in private, one could have sensed the pair were in quiet harmony.

But such moments are a thing of the past. Her husband became thoroughly embroiled in accusations of embezzlement and child trafficking. The scandal was so great, she was nearly enfolded in it as well. After all, as his wife, surely she must have known of, and turned a blind eye to his wrong doing. Her boss, Doji Oharu, was able to pull some strings and have the charges against her dropped. But her husband had no such savior, and was hanged as a common criminal.

She swore on that day that those who had led to her husband's downfall would never know peace or happiness again. One such culprit is at Kyuden Shika participating in a miai. The thought of their unearned happiness fills her with rage, and fuels her determination to deny them everything.

Ide Tomeo would not be out of place in the courts of the Crane or the Scorpion, though his purple kimono marks him quite clearly as a member of the nomadic Unicorn. He has an easy smile which he uses only when the situation that calls for it, a rather nice goatee he strokes when deep in thought, a deep, pleasant voice, and the position of clan magistrate for the Unicorn.
